WTO Frees Import Duties for E-Commerce until March 2024

The Director General of International Trade Negotiations at the Ministry of Trade, Djatmiko Bris Witjaksono, said that the moratorium on the imposition of e-commerce import duties was extended until the 13th WTO Ministerial Conference which will be held in December 2023.

Actually, continued Djatmiko, a number of developing countries that are members of the WTO want e-commerce import duties to be applied so that they can become one of the country’s fiscal sources. E-commerce itself, continued Djatmiko, has been given free space since 1998 to develop. For that, there needs to be a new regulation that regulates electronic transactions not only on the imposition of import duties, but also their management.
